Russell Edwards Q&A Pt 1
Who are you and what do you do?
I’ve done many things but am now retired and so I paint, play guitar and enjoy my family and my grandchildren especially.
Why do you do what you do?
As far back as I can remember I’ve studied paintings in books, particularly those depicting figures or portraiture, and I was always awestruck by the ability of artists to produce ‘realism’ in two dimensions.
I’m still fascinated to this day and try to paint as realistically as I can, attempting to emulate the great masters of the past such as Rembrandt and Vermeer to mention just two!
How do you work?
I tend to work mostly from my own photographs.
What’s integral to the work of an artist?
Basic drawing skills! But for many it’s the ability to pull the wool over countless people’s eyes!
What art do you most identify with?
I am a member of AERA [Association Embracing Realistic Art] and in my opinion the Art fraternity is littered with charlatans and frauds who lack the most basic of skills needed to produce work of any merit.
It seems to me that there are too many “artists’ who can pontificate about their work but are simply unable to draw! Representational painting and realism are what I strive to achieve in my paintings.
